This Somerville Scam Is Fool's Gold According To Police

The scam has reportedly been present throughout the region, and Somerville police have received reports of it occurring locally.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The police department is warning the community against a scam in which the perpetrators are urging people to purchase gold bars in order to protect their finances.

The department said it has received multiple reports recently from elderly residents in which they receive urgent alerts on their computers imploring them to turn their savings into gold to better secure their assets.

The Boston branch of the FBI has also been warning the state as a whole, as this particular scam has affected people throughout all of New England in recent years.

“From 2023 to May of 2025, FBI Boston documented 103 instances of a courier being used to pick up illicit cash or gold bars, with financial losses totaling $26,024,691,” FBI Boston said in a statement. “Roughly 98% of these losses were reported by individuals over the age of 60.”

59 of those victims were from Massachusetts.
