McGrath Highway Project Gets Federal Funding Boost

The City of Somerville wants to simplify the highway's overpass and make it more accessible.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city announced that it has secured a $43 million federal grant to help fund the McGrath Boulevard Project.

The project’s goal is to replace the elevated McGrath Overpass between Broadway and Third Street in Cambridge on Route 28 with a ground-level boulevard and connect the city’s eastern side with the western side.

According to Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, the new design would make the area more accessible for other forms of transportation such as walking and biking. She thanked the state’s Department of Transportation for its involvement in the project as well.

“For too long our community has been divided by a highway that doesn’t serve the needs of our residents. Grounding McGrath will make us safer and more connected, and it will right a decades-old wrong that harmed our neighborhoods,” Ballantyne said. “McGrath Boulevard will help people get where they need to go, whether they take transit, walk, bike, or drive.”
