Somerville City Leaders, State Reps Celebrate Opening Of GLX Community Path

At a ribbon-cutting event on Wednesday, June 28, local leaders and state reps will mark the opening of the GLX Community Path.

SOMERVILLE, MA – Somerville city leaders and state representatives will celebrate the opening of the Green Line Extension Community Path with a ribbon cutting ceremony this week.

The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 28 at 1 p.m. along the Green Line Extension (GLX) Community Path behind the Visiting Nursing Association of Eastern Massachusetts at 259 Lowell St. in Somerville.

Transportation Secretary Gina Fiandaca, MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, and Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne will be in attendance, along with State Senator Pat Jehlen, State Representative Mike Connolly, State Representative Christine Barber, Somerville City Council President Ben Ewen-Campen, Friends of the Community Path Representatives, and others.

The pathway officially opened to the public on June 10 as a final connection from Bedford, MA to the city of Cambridge and downtown Boston. It runs parallel to the GLX Medford Branch and offers direct access to newly built Green Line stations at Magoun Square, Gilman Square, East Somerville, and Lechmere stations.

The GLX Community Path also makes connections to 26 miles of bike paths along the Charles River.
