New Signs In Somerville: 200 ADA-compliant Signs Going Up

The signs are being installed at crosswalks and intersections throughout the city.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city announced it is installing 200 new signs that will emphasize utility for visually-impaired pedestrians.

The signs will be placed at intersections and crosswalks and will feature braille and raised text. In addition, the signs will alert people walking or wheeling to the presence of a button they can push to activate an audible and vibrotactile signal that lets them know when the walk signal is active and it is safe to cross. Some of the signs are also slated to include nearby street name information available in braille.

According to Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, the project will be in complete in less than one month.
