Somerville Route 28 Construction, New Traffic Pattern To Begin Soon

MassDOT is set to begin construction on Route 28 between Rufo Road and Poplar Street in Somerville starting March 27 through late May.

SOMERVILLE, MA – The Massachusetts Department of Transportation will begin construction on Route 28 next week and is implementing a new traffic pattern to go into effect Monday morning.

The construction will occur on Route 28 northbound between Rufo Road and Poplar Street beginning March 27 and continuing through late May, officials said in a news release.

On Monday morning, March 27, drivers can expect a right lane closure in the low speed lane. This closure is required to establish a work zone to perform concrete bridge deck repairs along Route 28 northbound, officials said. The work zone will remain in place at all times for the duration of the repairs.

The construction is part of a $15.6 million project to perform bridge repairs, paving and other related work on over a mile of Monsignor O’Brien/McGrath Highway Route 28 between Cambridge and Somerville.

MassDOT has asked drivers to make informed decisions before heading out onto the roadways and to follow signs and traffic control devices used to guide drivers through the work zone.
