Somerville’s Route 28 New Traffic Pattern Begins Soon
On Thursday, April 20, a MassDOT contractor will open the low-speed lane and implement a lane closure in the high-speed lane.
SOMERVILLE, MA – Construction will occur in the Route 28 northbound high-speed lane between Rufo Road and Poplar Street in Somerville from April 20 through late May, MassDOT officials said in a news release.
On Thursday, April 20, a MassDOT contractor will open the low-speed lane and implement a lane closure in the high-speed lane.
The closure is required to establish a work zone to perform concrete bridge deck repairs along Route 28 northbound. The work zone will remain in place at all times for the duration of the repairs.

The work is being conducted as part of a $15.6 million project to perform bridge repairs, paving and other related work on 1.5 miles of Monsignor O’Brien/McGrath Highway Route 28 between Cambridge and Somerville.
Authorities encourage drivers to make informed decisions before heading out onto the roadways, and to expect delays, reduce speed, and use caution.
