Somerville Schools Becoming Solar Powered

Somerville High School unveiled its new energy source.

SOMERVILLE, MA — The city and public school district unveiled a new array of solar panels atop Somerville High School.

The 17,000 square feet of solar panels marks the second installation of its kind in the city, with East Somerville Community School recently becoming solar-powered.

According to the city, the high school solar panels will save approximately $1.2 million in energy savings annually as well as produce seven million kilowatt hours of clean energy throughout its lifespan.

These solar implementations are steps of the city’s Climate Forward Plan, which has the goal of achieving carbon-net negative emissions in the future.

“This array puts into action our student’s, the City’s, and the school’s shared commitment to addressing climate change and creating a better future for all,” Mayor Katjana Ballantyne said.
