SUDBURY, MA — Voters in Sudbury will head to the polls Monday for the 2023 town election, which will feature three contested races for seats on the select board, planning board and Goodnow Library board.

And for the first time in several years, the spring election will also feature two ballot questions asking voters to allow the town to increase property taxes to pay for a new fire engine and the upcoming schools budget.

Here's everything you need to know about who's running in 2023, and how to vote.

Where, when to vote

Polls will be open in Sudbury from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday. The town will offer two polling places, depending on your precinct.

  • Town Hall, 322 Concord Road: Precincts 4 and 6
  • Fairbank Community Center gym, 40 Fairbank Road: Precincts 1, 2, 3 and 5

Voting by mail

If you've opted to vote by mail this year, ballots are due back to the town by 8 p.m. on Monday. It's likely too late to actually mail your ballot, so your best bet is to either drop in the box outside town hall or hand it in at the clerk's office.

What's On The Ballot

There will be 10 races on your ballot, but only three are competitive: select board, Goodnow Library trustees and planning board.

The Sudbury Public Schools ballot question would raise about $745,000, which is the amount the district needs above what the Sudbury town manager recommended for the schools budget for fiscal year 2024. If the override is not approved, the school district may have to cut some transportation services, but also increase middle and elementary school class sizes. Classes in grades 3 to 8 could increase from 24 students on average to 28.

The second tax override would raise about $1 million to replace a 17-year-old fire engine. The cost of the vehicle would add about 16 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value on tax bills. The owner of an average priced home valued at $957,000 would pay about $155 more per year. If approved, the fire engine would be delivered in about three years.

2023 Candidate Forums

The League of Women Voters of Sudbury held forums recently for several races. Each forum can be viewed online, and viewers can skip through questions by topic or candidate. The league did not tape a planning board forum because only one candidate appeared. Here are links to each forum:
