Sudbury Residents Nominated for Military Academies

U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-3rd, announced today she will hold a reception Thursday at Lowell City Hall to honor 31 residents from the Third Congressional District who she has nominared for appointment to the U.S. Military, Naval, Air Force, and Merchant Marine academies.

Students were nominated based on their academics, extracurricular activities, and interviews with Tsongas' independent Academies Nomination Committee.

“Each year I have the privilege of nominating a select group of young men and women from the Third Congressional District to our nation's service academies," Tsongas said in a statement.

"These nominees have demonstrated academic excellence in their high school classrooms, considerable achievement in athletic and extracurricular activities, and a strong desire to serve their communities and country. This reception will offer the opportunity to honor these remarkable young men and women and recognize their dedication to the Third District’s proud military tradition.”

Only a handful of students across the country are admitted each year to the academies. Nominations are forwarded to the academies and appointments for entrance are offered as the students are evaluated. Last year, three students who Tsongas nominated received an appointment.
