Rep. Clark Joins Dems In 'Fact Finding Mission' At Texas Border

Rep. Katherine Clark called Trump's recent executive order a "fig leaf," and plans to visit the border this weekend.

MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA—Congresswoman Katherine Clark, MA District 5, is criticizing President Donald's Trump Wednesday's executive order aimed at ending family separation at the United States border and also joining democratic colleagues in a "fact-finding mission" in Texas this weekend.

“Trump’s executive order is a political fig leaf," said Clark in a statement, "rather than a reversal of the administration’s cruel policy of ripping babies and children from their parents and detaining them in tents and cages. It provides no plans to reunite the more than 2,000 children currently separated from their parents. It also seeks to end the twenty day limit on holding children thus allowing families and children to be detained indefinitely."

Clark in a statement said that Trump and his administration have repeatedly lied to the American people, and only signed the executive order because of the "outcry of the public."

It "is the only reason why the president has backtracked on his own disastrous policy, and continued pressure is the only thing that will ensure the safety of these children," she said in a statement. "I will be traveling to the Texas border this week to attempt to determine the welfare and whereabouts of the children separated from their parents and demand answers about their ongoing care and plans for reunification with their families.”

Representing the 5th Congressional District, Clark's towns and cities include Arlington, Ashland, Belmont, Framingham, Holliston, Lexington, Lincoln, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Natick, Sherborn, Stoneham, Sudbury, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, Weston, Winchester, Woburn Revere, Winthrop and Southborough.

Clark is heading to the U.S.-Mexico border near McAllen and Brownsville, TX, on Saturday, June 23. She and other more than 20 other democrats in Congress are planning to speak to children and parents that have been separated at the border.

The Congress members plan to tour both the Border Patrol Station and Centralized Processing Center in Texas, as well as visit the ICE Detention Center in Port Isabel.
