21 Residents Selected to Represent Watertown at the State Democratic Convention

Twenty-one Watertown residents will help shape the priorities of the Democratic Party in Massachusetts as delegates to the state convention.

The delegates were selected at the Watetown Democratic Town Caucus, and will head to Lowell in July for the convention.

“At our 2013 convention, these delegates selected by Watertown Democrats will debate and adopt our platform for the next four years, catch up and network with other organizers around the Commonwealth and hear from some exciting future leaders of our party,” said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair John Walsh in a release.

The turnout at the town caucus encouraged Steve Owens, chairman of the Watertown Democratic Town Committee.

"It was great to see such enthusiasm from Watertown Democrats. We’re ready to harness that energy to make sure a Democrat is elected as our next Senator in the June 25th special election,”  Owens said.

The Delegates

The delegates selected by attendees were: Caroline Bays, Bonnie Baranowski, Anna Clark, Yasmin Daikh, Paul Fahey, Al Gordon, Kelly Hunt, Jane Imai, Sengil Inkiala, Ben Jackson, Cecilia Lenk, Richard Marcus, Isaac Maze, Tony Palomba, Carol Pennington, Mark Pennington, Will Pennington, Maria Saiz, Raya Stern, Diane Tiernan and Clyde Younger.  

In addition, Owens, Chair of the Watertown Democratic Town Committee, will serve as an ex officio delegate. Also serving as ex officio delegates are Watertown State Representatives Jonathan Hecht and John Lawn, Governor’s Councilor Marilyn Devaney and members of the Democratic State Committee Rachel Kaprielian, Melvin Poindexter and Tina Poindexter.

Workshop

The Democratic Town Committee will host a Party Platform Workshop on Feb. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lower Hearing Room of Watertown Town Hall. Cambridge City Councilor Leland Cheung, a member of the Democratic Party’s Platform Drafting Committee, will run the workshop and take testimony.  

All Democrats interested in having their say in the 2013 platform are welcome to attend the workshop, Owens said.

Those interested in attending the convention as a delegate may still have their chance, Owens said. 

In addition to delegates who are elected at caucus, those who meet the qualifications, may apply to be add-on delegates in the following categories: youth, minority, and disabled. Applications are available by contacting the Democratic Party at 617-939-0800. Completed applications must be returned to the Democratic State Committee by March 29.
