Watertown's Dealtry Memorial Pool May Remain Closed for the July 4 Weekend

Watertown's Dealtry Memorial Pool remains closed at this hour — and it's not yet clear if it will re-open in time for the holiday weekend.

Weather forecasts are of a warm, but not sizzingly hot, weekend.

The closing of two dozen state-run deep-water public swimming pools comes in the wake of the apparent drowning death of a woman in a public Fall River pool. The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is investigating the death, especially since the body reportedly was at the bottom of the pool for three days before it was found.

DCR Commissioner Edward Lambert, Jr. said in a statement that the entire staff at the Veteran's Memorial Pool in Fall River would remain on administrative leave until further notice.

Lambert's statement said the DCR has "staff dedicated to our internal investigation and to a top-to-bottom review of all of DCR's pool operation and safety procedures. Over the next 24 to 48 hours I have instructed our senior staff to review physical infrastructure, safety procedures, and training and certification processes at DCR operated deepwater pools.

"We continue to provide information to local and state law enforcement during their ongoing investigation," the Lambert statement continues. "Until their investigation and our own internal review are complete we won't be making statements regarding the specifics of either investigation."
