More Than 160 Attend Literacy Night at Arthurs Middle School

Building on the recent success of the first Family Literacy Night at Arthurs, staff have decided to hold a similar night in December.

Grimmelsman said more than 160 parents, students and staff attended literacy night on Feb. 28.

Celebrity guests including high school students, elementary teachers, coaches and a Trenton police officer read to more than 125 parents and students to promote literacy.

Grimmelsman selected celebrity guest readers that would likely draw middle school readers, but children as young as nine months old attended the event.

"I tried to pick people like elementary teachers to try to get the middle school students involved, because I knew they weren't going to come to have our staff read to them," Grimmelsman said.

The next Family Literacy night has not been officially scheduled, but Grimmelsman said the night will include a few changes that guests are sure to enjoy including music and art projects from Hedke and Anderson elementary students.

"Reading to students is extremely important for reading development," Grimmelsman said. "As a community, we need to stand up and support reading and writing skills."
