Flood Watch Issued For Somerset County As Heavy Showers Expected

Heavy showers and thunderstorms could bring excessive rain to the area on Tuesday.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A flood watch has been issued for Somerset County as heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to bring excessive rain on Tuesday.

The flood watch, issued by the National Weather Service(NWS), is in effect from 2 p.m. on Tuesday through 2 a.m. on Wednesday.

Another round of heavy showers and thunderstorms is expected to develop Tuesday afternoon and continue into the evening.

"These storms will have the potential to bring rainfall amounts of 1 to 3 inches within a brief period of time leading to flash flooding," according to the NWS.

Up to 4 inches of total localized rainfall amounts are possible before showers and storms wind down overnight Tuesday.

As a result, excessive runoff may cause flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone areas. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast:

  • Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
  • Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m., then showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly after 8 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 70. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday: A chance of showers before 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. West wind around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 66. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm.
  • Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon.
  • Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 64.
  • Independence Day: Sunny, with a high near 85.
