Flooding, Scorching Heat Expected In Somerset County Tuesday

A heat advisory and a flood watch have been issued for Somerset County on Tuesday.

SOMERSET COUNTY, NJ — A heat advisory and a flood watch have been issued for Somerset County on Tuesday.

The heat advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday as heat index values up to 103 are expected, according to the National Weather Service(NWS).

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. The NWS offers the following tips:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors
  • Take extra precautions when outside
  • Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing
  • Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening
  • Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Additionally, a Flood Watch is in effect from Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night.

"A frontal boundary will collide with a tropical airmass and produce widespread showers and thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night. Rainfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour or more will be possible, leading to flash flooding," according to the NWS.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas.

Here is a look at the upcoming forecast:

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3 p.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Heat index values as high as 105. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tuesday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 7 p.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 7 p.m. and 2 a.m., then a slight chance of showers after 2 a.m. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. Calm wind becoming west around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11 p.m., then a chance of showers between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 5 a.m. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 71. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 p.m., then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 2 and 5 p.m., then showers and thunderstorms likely after 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 5 a.m., then a slight chance of showers. Cloudy, with a low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 88. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.
