How Does a Handbell Choir Actually Work?

A handbell choir works together to create music through a highly coordinated and collaborative effort. At Pluckemin Presbyterian Church, our handbell choir, called "The Carillons" is directed by Marcia McBurney, who has been our Handbell Director since 1992. Marcia has constructed a talented and dedicated team of musicians who ring periodically at at the church and perform two concerts a year. Our spring concert is Sunday, June 2nd at 7:00pm in the Main Sanctuary of the church.

The Carillons will be playing Sacred and Secular music on 5 octaves of Handbells and 7 octaves of Hand Chimes.

But how does a Handbell Choir actually work?

1. Assignment of Bells: Each member of the handbell choir is assigned specific bells or sets of bells corresponding to certain notes. The distribution of bells depends on the range and complexity of the music being performed.
2. Reading the Music: Members read from a musical score specifically arranged for handbells. The score indicates when each bell should be rung. Each ringer is responsible for playing their assigned notes accurately and at the correct time.
3. Techniques and Articulation: Handbell ringers use various techniques to produce different sounds. These include ringing (basic technique), damping (stopping the sound), and specialized techniques like malleting, plucking, or martellato (striking the bell against a padded surface). Each technique contributes to the texture and expression of the music.
4. Coordination and Timing: Precise coordination and timing are crucial. Ringers must watch the conductor for cues and maintain a steady tempo. They also need to listen closely to ensure their notes blend harmoniously with the rest of the choir.
5. Practice and Rehearsal: Regular practice and rehearsal are essential for a handbell choir to perform effectively. During rehearsals, the choir works on timing, dynamics, and expression. They also practice transitions and the use of different techniques to achieve the desired musical effect. The Pluckemin Church Carillons rehearse weekly from September to May.
6. Teamwork and Mutual Support: A strong sense of teamwork and mutual support is vital. Each ringer’s contribution is important, and everyone relies on each other to create a cohesive and beautiful performance.
7. Conductor’s Role: Marcia plays a crucial role in guiding the choir, setting the tempo, and shaping the musical interpretation.
