Edison Man Saved By Bystanders, Police After New Brunswick Crash

A doctor from Robert Wood Johnson witnessed the crash, and worked with bystanders and police to help save the man's life.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — An Edison man pinned under a car in New Brunswick was rescued by police and bystanders, including a doctor, after an early-morning crash on Sunday, New Brunswick police said.

The pedestrian, 37-year-old Mauricio Martinez, was struck and pinned underneath a car near Easton Avenue and Albany Street just after midnight Sunday morning. One bystander, a doctor from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, said they needed to free Martinez quickly because the car was resting on his chest and could be impeding his breathing, police said.

Two bystanders and police physically lifted the car, while the doctor pulled Martinez out. Martinez was taken to Robert Wood for treatment; he survived his injuries.
