WATCH: Gov. Phil Murphy toured a field medical station as New Jersey continues to deal with the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

EDISON – Gov. Phil Murphy toured a field medical station at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center in Edison on Wednesday. Watch it below.

Murphy said the field medical stations "will greatly assist our efforts to alleviate stress and expand flexibility for New Jersey’s brick-and-mortar hospitals in the coming weeks."

Murphy toured the field medical station joined U.S. Senator Cory Booker and other dignitaries.

Developments in the new coronavirus outbreak continue to unfold rapidly in New Jersey now that the number of cases has risen to 44,416, and 1,232 people have died. Read more: NJ Coronavirus Updates: Here's What You Need To Know

The state has planned at least four "pop-up" hospitals to open in response to the coronavirus pandemic, but the first one to open was the Secaucus location, which was on track for a soft opening this past Monday, April 6, according to the state health department.

In fact, Murphy and U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez were in Secaucus Thursday for a brief, 20-minute tour of the hospital, located at the Meadowlands Expo Center.

That 250-bed hospital should be ready to take patients Monday, said Col. Patrick Callahan, superintendent of New Jersey State Police, who was also on site Thursday.
