Lost Haddonfield: Rural Recreation

The past comes alive in pictures every Sunday morning.

"After 200 years as a successful farm, the press of the modern world intruded on the farm, not in the form of a housing development, but in the form of a country club," according to Douglas B. Rauschenberger and Katherine Mansfield Tassini in Lost Haddonfield.

This phenomenon is illustrated with three pictures today. Hinchman Farms, in the Lizzie Haddon section of Haddonfield was purchased around 1900 for leisure activities, such as golf. It was replaced by 1920 with Tavistock Farm to avoid "blue laws" in Haddonfield that prohibited playing golf on Sunday.

We also feature pictures from Evans Pond and local tennis clubs. The pictures are part of the Historical Society of Haddonfield archives.
