Jersey City August Heat Advisory: What To Know, Cancelations

An excessive heat warning is in effect for several hours on Wednesday and Thursday.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Excessive heat is sweeping through Jersey City and Hudson County again, and the National Weather Service has issued an excessive Heat Warning from 11 a.m. through 8 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service, the first excessive heat warning could bring dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 107 expected. For the second Excessive Heat Warning, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 108 expected.

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures. Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has air conditioning. Check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

Today: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 93. Heat index values as high as 102. South wind 8 to 10 mph.

Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8pm. Partly cloudy, with a low around 77. South wind 6 to 9 mph.

Thursday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 105. Southwest wind 7 to 11 mph.

Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 77. Southwest wind 6 to 10 mph.

Cooling Centers

The last major heatwave in Jersey City was in July. The city opened several cooling centers in response and has kept them open as a safe place for residents to beat the heat.

The senior centers in Jersey City are being used as cooling centers and are open daily from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and the addresses are listed below:

Cancellations

The Jersey City Free Public Library canceled planned outdoor programs for Wednesday and Thursday between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Pools and Splash Pads To Cool Down

Even in a heatwave the kids will want to play outside — luckily Jersey City has several public pools and splash pads open for free to residents, all you have to do is find one closest to you! Splash pads in the city are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily throughout the summer.

  • Pavonia/Marion Municipal Pool: 914 Pavonia Ave.
    • This is a public pool for Jersey City residents only. Anyone over 18 has to show current photo ID & proof of residency before entering the facility.
    • Main Pool goes from 3.5 feet to 9 feet. Kiddie Pool goes from 0 feet to 3.5 feet.
  • Pershing Field Pool: 201 Central Ave
    • Pershing Field Pool is located in Pershing Field Park. It is an indoor pool starting at 3.5 feet to 12 feet deep. It is a 6-lane pool, 25 meters (1 lap) distance. A small parking lot is available. Photo ID and proof of residency are required by all adult nonmembers
