Jersey City Is Still 2nd Largest City In NJ

New census data shows Jersey City's population increased by about 15.3 percent, but the city kept its second place spot.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — The numbers are in and despite Jersey City's population growth, the city remained the second-largest city in New Jersey, just behind Newark.

Updated Census numbers released on Thursday show that Jersey City's population count went from 247,597 in 2010 to 292,449 in 2020, about a 15.3 percent increase. Newark's population in 2020 was 311,549 according to Census data, a 12.4 percent increase from 2010.

Mayor Steven Fulop tweeted on Wednesday asking residents what their guess would be for population estimates. Several guesses on the tweet thread were in the 280,000 to 300,000 range.
