PARAMUS, NJ — The state executive order requiring masks in schools is set to expire Monday, and Paramus Schools will also be mask-optional in most cases.

Masks will still be required in the following cases:

  • If an individual is in quarantine because of close contact, stays home for 5 days, and returns to school without a negative COVID-19 test on Day 5, they must wear a mask from Days 6-10.
  • If an individual begins feeling sick with COVID-like symptoms while at school.
  • If a state or legal order directs the district to enforce mask wearing.

Also, Adams said, masks may be required if the community spread rises or if there is an active outbreak in a school or classroom.

Bergen County is now at a "low" COVID activity level, according to the state and to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Districts have the option to keep the mandate in place after March 7.

The statewide mandate for masks on school buses was also dropped.

"As a district, we will continue to support our students as they navigate this new school environment they either have not experienced since March 2020 or, for our younger students, have never experienced," Adams said. This transition will likely elicit a variety of responses from our students, and although a sense of familiarity may exist, there will certainly be an adjustment period.

"Each of us has experienced different levels and varieties of stressors, family health situations, and perspectives during this pandemic. It is important for all of us to reflect upon these points, remain patient with each other, and exhibit respect for the uniqueness of each individual's choice for either wearing or not wearing a mask.

"Your child’s principal will also be sending a separate communication ahead of March 7 that contains age-appropriate considerations and strategies for assisting students in making that transition to this environment."
