Pedestrian Hospitalized In Bergen Hit-And-Run Crash Has Died: Police

Alan Friedman, 75, who was struck by an oncoming vehicle while walking in Closter, has died as a result of the collision, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A 75-year-old pedestrian who was hospitalized in a hit-and-run crash in Closter earlier this week has died, according to authorities.

Alan Friedman, who was gravely injured Sunday after being struck by an SUV driven by Jesus Yunganaula Tenempaguay, died Monday as a result of the collision, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Tenempaguay, originally charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, was accused of driving drunk when he hit the Closter man on Durie Avenue, and then fleeing the area, Musella said.

Charges against the 37-year-old Hackensack driver were upgraded the day Friedman died to vehicular homicide, and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, the prosecutor's office said.

Tenempaguay is still also charged with hindering apprehension and has multiple summonses for violations related to his driving while intoxicated, the prosecutor said.
