Barricaded Teaneck Man Removed By SWAT Team

Police were called to a Churchill Road home late Sunday afternoon after receiving a report of a shooting.

TEANECK, NJ - A report of a shooting inside a Teaneck home Sunday afternoon turned out to be false, but the incident drew a heavy law enforcement response to the neighborhood, shut down roads and required neighboring houses to be evacuated while officers investigated.

Around 4 p.m., Teaneck police called to a Churchill Road home around 4 p.m. after receiving a report of a shooting inside of the house, Deputy Police Chief John A. Faggello said.

There, responding officers "began a dialogue" with a man inside the home "who was apparently experiencing some type of medical condition and presenting with an altered mental state" and tried to coax him out, the deputy chief said.

After the man refused to do so, Faggello said "it was quickly determined that law enforcement was dealing with a barricaded subject type situation" and Bergen County Regional SWAT team was called to the home to take control of the situation.

At 7 p.m., after attempts to negotiate with the man to leave his home were unsuccessful, the SWAT team went inside and "was able to safely" secure him, the deputy chief said.

A sweep of the residence didn’t reveal any victims of a shooting, any evidence of a firearm being discharged, or any firearms, Faggello said.

The man was taken to an area medical center for treatment, according to the deputy chief.
