Teaneck Man Sexually Assaulted Child Over 8 Years, Prosecutor Says

TEANECK, NJ — A Teaneck man who was arrested earlier this month for sexually assaulting a child is now in custody again on new charges, prosecutors say.

Diego A. Zhinin, 37, of Teaneck, was charged on Aug. 1 with second-degree sexual assault, two counts of second-degree endangering the welfare, and third-degree aggravated criminal sexual contact, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office earlier this month.

Prosecutors said that the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency had contacted their Special Victims Unit on Aug. 1 regarding the alleged sexual abuse of a juvenile under 16. Investigators determined that Zhinin sexually assaulted the child in Teaneck between November 2020 through this past July.

On Aug. 2, Zhinin was arrested in Teaneck. He was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.

But he was released after a first appearance in court to await further court action, prosecutors said this week.

On Wednesday afternoon, prosecutors announced that he has been re-arrested on additional charges.

Detectives determined that the sexual assaults actually took place from November 2016 through this past July, prosecutors said. The assaults took place in Teaneck, Hackensack, and Maywood, prosecutors said.

This past Friday, Zhinin surrendered at the Maywood Police Department.

He was arrested and charged with four more counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault and one count of first-degree criminal attempt to commit sexual assault, prosecutors said.

He remains held in the Bergen County Jail to await a detention hearing in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.
