Second Fugitive Shootout Suspect Caught Seeking Medical Treatment: Bergen County Prosecutor

A week after two men shot at each other at a Bergen County intersection, one of them was captured after he went to the hospital.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A man who was on the run following a shootout at a Bergen County intersection was captured when he went to the Emergency Room, prosecutors said.

Mikhi Maddox Doum, 20, of Garfield and Jonathan M. Ortiz, 20, of Garfield allegedly shot at each other at a Garfield intersection on the morning of Sept. 2, said the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office last week.

When they arrived, they found evidence of gunfire, but no victims or perpetrators.

Investigators determined that seven gunshots were fired in the street between two men who had an "altercation." Then they fled, prosecutors say.

On Sept. 3, Odum's home was searched — with children present — and detectives recovered the gun, prosecutors said. He was arrested without incident.

He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause serious bodily injury by discharging a firearm, fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, a weapons charge, and second-degree endangering the welfare of a minor.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await his first appearance in the Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.

But Ortiz remained at large for a week, prosecutors said.

He was charged with second-degree aggravated assault by attempting to cause serious bodily injury by discharging a firearm, fourth-degree aggravated assault by pointing a firearm, and weapons charges.

On Sept. 7, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Ortiz walked into the Emergency Room of Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck to be treated for a gunshot wound to the arm, prosecutors said.

Hospital staff immediately notified the Teaneck Police Department, prosecutors said. The Prosecutor's Office also responded, they said.

Ortiz was treated for his injury and released from the hospital into police custody.

He was taken to the Bergen County Jail to await a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
