Charity Volunteer Wrote Checks From Organization To Herself: Bergen County Prosecutor
A Teaneck woman was charged for defrauding a charity, said Bergen County prosecutors.

TEANECK, NJ — A Teaneck woman was charged for writing checks from a local charity to herself, prosecutors said.
Karen A. McEvoy, 57, of Teaneck, was charged with theft by deception, impersonation, and forgery, said Bergen County prosecutors.
Prosecutors said that in February 2025, the Teaneck Police Department contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit regarding an alleged theft of funds at a non-profit in Bergen County.

An investigation determined that McEvoy, a volunteer for the organization, committed theft by deception by writing unauthorized checks from the organization’s bank account that she deposited into her personal bank account, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said she assumed the identity of another member of the organization and forged signatures on the checks in order to authorize the fraudulent transactions.

The amounts fraudulently obtained by McEvoy totaled approximately $36,000, police said.
She was arrested on May 30, prosecutors said.
She was released to await a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, prosecutors said.
