TEANECK, NJ — A middle school in Teaneck has an increased law enforcement presence Tuesday after a threat was found in a bathroom, school officials said.
In a letter sent to the school community, dated Monday, Benjamin Franklin Middle School Principal Terrence Williams said that a student at the school had found graffiti in a girls' restroom that read, "I'm gonna shoot up the school tomorrow."
Williams said in the letter, "We take all such statements seriously, regardless of intent."

• The principal and assistant superintendent immediately consulted with local law enforcement.
"Based on consultations and the initial investigation, authorities have determined there is no imminent threat to scholars or staff," Williams wrote in his letter.
However, the investigation will continue, and there will be an increased law enforcement presence during the time the matter is investigated, he said.
The principal asked parents to remind students not to engage in vandalism or threats, and to report anything suspicious. He thanked the student who reported the threat.
Superintendent Responds
On Tuesday morning, Superintendent Andre Spencer gave Patch a statement saying, "We can confirm that a message was shared yesterday with Benjamin Franklin Middle School families and staff regarding a situation that was promptly addressed by school administration in coordination with local law enforcement.
"At this time, there is no threat to the school or any other Teaneck Public Schools campus. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities. Out of an abundance of caution, there has been an increased law enforcement presence at Benjamin Franklin Middle School today to provide additional reassurance to the school community.
"As this remains an active investigation, we are unable to provide further details at this time."
The full letter was posted on social media by former Councilman Keith Kaplan, who reminded residents, "As the letter states, 'If they see something, they should say something."
