Westfield Spreads Positivity With 'Chalk The Walk' Event: PHOTOS

After racial slurs were etched in chalk at Jefferson Elementary School, the town hosted an event to combat hate with positive messages.

WESTFIELD, NJ — In response to bias incident that occurred at Westfield's Jefferson Elementary School two weeks ago, the town hosted 'Chalk The Walk' to promote positivity and acceptance.

Mayor Shelley Brindle and members of the Westfield Police Department joined elementary students and community members on Wednesday to write positive messages in chalk along the sidewalk near Jefferson Elementary — the same spot where racial slurs were etched in chalk recently.

This goal of this event, hosted by Westfield's Human Relations Advisory Commission, was to combat the racist graffiti with words of tolerance and bring the community together.

Police Chief Christopher Battiloro and School Resource Officer Nicholas Calello also participated in the chalk event.
