$3.9 Million Culvert Replacement Project In Wyckoff Expected To Begin This Winter

A project to replace a culvert conveying a tributary under Route 208 was awarded to a Hackensack contractor.

WYCKOFF, NJ — A $3.9 million project to replace a metal culvert with significant distortion and corrosion under Route 208 in Wyckoff is expected to begin this winter, a New Jersey Department of Transportation notice said.

Awarded to New Prince Concrete Construction, of Hackensack, in May, the state government project, in the area of Terhune Terrace, from milepost 6 to milepost 6.63, is expected to be completed some time in 2024, the notice said.

Originally constructed in the 1950s, the corrugated metal pipe conveys an unnamed tributary under the state highway, and is rated in poor condition, with extensive corrosion, leakage and open joints, the notice said.

Despite improvements in 1970 and 1993, and relining in the late-2000s to address cracking, the culvert is distorted and does not have the hydraulic capacity to convey the discharge of a 25-year storm event, the notice said.

The project proposes to replace the culvert with a reinforced elliptical concrete pipe to accommodate a 25-year storm event without adversely affecting adjacent properties. Existing guide rail, along the highway, will also be replaced.

"It is anticipated that this proposed work will not require acquisition of property or impact utilities," the notice said.

Culvert construction will be accomplished in four stages, starting with removal of the media barrier on Route 208 to allow for traffic shifts around the work zones. Once construction is complete, the median barrier will be replaced.
