Flooded Bergen Streets, Trapped Cars Follow Latest Storm

There was flooding on Interstate 80 and on streets in Hackensack and Lodi. The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook also rose to action stage Tuesday.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Vehicles were stuck in flash floods in the southern part of the county Tuesday morning following thunderstorms that blanketed New Jersey Monday into Tuesday.

In Lodi, multiple vehicles were stuck on heavily flooded streets, including Polifly Road, the Hackensack Fire Department reported. All occupants were safely removed.

Local flooding was also reported in Hackensack. Exit 65 on Interstate 80 eastbound was closed due to flooding, 511nj.org, the state's emergency traffic notification system, reported.

The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook in Ho-Ho-Kus was at a height of 2.54 feet as of 9 a.m. All other local waterways, including the Hackensack and Ramapo rivers were not forecast to flood, information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed.

More than 229,000 people were without power following a severe thunderstorm that swept across North Jersey Monday. Less than 200 people in Bergen County were without power Tuesday morning, including 73 in Mahwah, 52 in Tenafly, and 32 in Englewood.

A severe thunderstorm warning — which means severe weather is more imminent in the region — was also issued in most New Jersey counties.
