Handheld Hoses OK, Sprinklers Still Banned

Following three days of stringent water restrictions, Ridgewood Water has relaxed its outside watering ban.

The utility announced Friday that handheld hoses for gardens and shrubs are permitted for its customers in Wyckoff, Ridgewood, Glen Rock and Midland Park. "Improvement in tank levels," caused the eased restriction, according to an announcement on the village's website.

However, Ridgewood Water said a Stage IV water restriction is still in effect. That measure—the most serious in its four-tiered restriction process—prohibits manual and automatic sprinkler use.

Violators are subject to summons, fines and discontinuance of water service, Ridgewood Water said. 

Village Manager Dr. Ken Gabbert issued the restriction Tuesday following high temperatures, a lack of rainfall and unprecedented consumption. Additionally, Ridgewood Water Director Frank Moritz said Wednesday that promised help from United Water did not come as that utility was experiencing its own shortage.

Mortiz said he and Gabbert would decide to lessen restrictions as the situation became more stable. Rain continues to fall intermittently, with forecasts calling for showers and thunderstorms throughout the weekend.
