Hearing on Smoking Ban, Movies at the Library This Week

Take a look at what's happening this week in Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes.

*The Wyckoff Township Committee will hold a hearing Tuesday night and is expected to vote on a proposal to create smoke-free zones around municipal parks.

The ordinance was proposed in May after an endorsement from the Boards of Health and Recreation, and would have banned tobacco smoke on properties owned by the municipality.

Officials tabled the ban two weeks later, citing concerns about enforcement and the potential of residents being ticketed for lighting up in parking lots. The ordinance was reintroduced in July with new stipulations on signage and exemptions for parking lots and roadways.

The committee will meet Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

*The Wyckoff and Franklin Lakes libraries will be holding free screenings of movies throughout the week, beginning Monday afternoon with a 2 p.m. showing of "The Impossible."

The 2012 film starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor follows the experience of a family surviving the 2004 Tsunami.

On Thursday, "The Hunger Games," the first installment in silver screen adaptations of the popular children's series penned by Suzanne Collins, will show at the library at 7 p.m.

Look out for some local scenery in the flick - the film's production company was reportedly filming off Skyline Drive in Oakland earlier this year. Both showings will be held in the library's Shotmeyer Room.

For the younger audience, the Franklin Lakes Library will be screening "Finding Nemo," on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The 2003 Disney-Pixar production features an all-star cast of celebrity voices for the story of a mother fish's underwater search for her lost son.
