Letter: Preserve Maple Lake as Open Space
'Lovely community' has gotten increasingly congested over the years
To the Editor:
I am writing to you today regarding the 26 acres of property off of Maple Drive in Wyckoff, commonly referred to as Maple Lake. Since we moved into Wyckoff 18 years ago, Maple Lake has been a discussion for the town and the community. I understand that there is the opportunity for the Township of Wyckoff to acquire all or part of Maple Lake and preserve it as an open space area within the township through the use of State of New Jersey Green Acres Funding.
I am troubled by the disappearance of open space in Wyckoff. Traffic in Wyckoff has gotten worse and worse over the years. We now have a second super food store coming into the area which certainly won't help this situation. Eighteen years ago, we moved into a lovely, small, friendly community and over the last few years, the congestion has begun to change the complexion of our town. In that vein, I am equally concerned about the adverse impact on our community of any construction of new homes on the Maple Lake property.
As a community I believe it is imperative that we preserve and protect our remaining open spaces. As a council, I believe it is additionally their responsibility to preserve the wonderful environment—both physical and cultural—woven into our community. I urge our elected representatives to apply for Green Acres funding and take the action necessary to preserve Maple Lake.
