Ramapo High School recently posted victories in several sports:

Boys Soccer

  • The junior varsity team scored a win over Paramus Catholic Monday, 1-0.

The Raiders got on the board about 15 minutes into the game with a Brandon Vega goal off a Connor Spatz pass. The boys spent the rest of the afternoon in a scoring stalemate, with both squads getting chances at the goal. Paramus Catholic had a great chance on a shot from about 20 yards out in the second half, but Will Shiel was able to keep the Paladins off the scoreboard. With Paramus Catholic unable to convert, the Raiders went on to preserve the 1-0 victory.

The junior varsity team next faces Northern Highlands at home on Wednesday.

  • The freshmen boys also bested Paramus Catholic Monday, with a 4-1 final.

Taylor Gerety got the Raiders in front first with a goal from about 18 yards out in the first half. Harry Tomczyk scored on an Anthony Guaglardi assist, and the Paladins added a goal to keep the score at 2-1 for much of the game.

However, Matt Grassi put a ball home on an assist from Mike Salek with about five minutes left in the game, and Dan Dominguez, on an an assist from Gerety, added the final score for the 4-1 final.

The freshmen next play Thursday on the road against Northern Highlands.

  • The varsity team also defeated Paramus Catholic, 3-0, on Sunday evening.

Mike Taranto got the boys going in a slow first half, scoring on an assist from Sean Etheridge. Taranto would add a goal in the second half, as well, as would Etheridge, on assists from Matt Deziel and Tom Garrambone.

Ramapo's Mike DeVito had three saves, and Paladins goalkeeper Eric Iannacone had seven saves. For more coverage, click this link.

The boys travel to Northern Highlands on Wednesday for a 4:30 p.m. start.

Cross Country

Ramapo's runners continued their fast start to the season by defeating Demarest on Monday at Garrett Mountain.

The boys faced a talented Demarest squad in a close meet, but eked out the victory 26 to 29 to extend their record to 3-0 in dual meets. The boys also welcomed back standout runner Brad Paternostro, who had missed the start of the season due to injury.

The girls had a bit easier time, taking down Demarest 23 to 38 to also extend their record to 3-0 in dual meets.

  • Both boys and girls also defeated Fair Lawn last week. 

The boys were led by Andrew Wilson, who posted a winning time of 17:02 as the Raiders beat the Cutters, 25 to 32. Seniors Chris Cohane, Mike Mortillo, Anthony Darakjy and sophomore Kevin Zellers rounded out the scoring.

The girls were led by freshman Deanna DiLandro, who posted a winning time of 21:07 in their 20 to 41 victory. Seniors Emiy Brown, Allie Antosy, Morgan Repetto and sophomore Anna Coffey rounded out the top five.

Both the boys and girls next meet is on Saturday at the Passaic County Coaches Invitational.

Girls Tennis

  • The Raiders tennis team, led by coach Kim Marchese, remained undefeated with a 4-1 victory over Chatham High School on Monday.

In singles action, Amanda Muliawan defeated Lesley Perselay, 6-1, 6-0; Lisa Jouravleva beat Nicki Rossi, 6-0, 6-2; and Katie Nerlino lost to Emily Barley, 7-5, 7-5.

The doubles team of Ashley Garbaccio and Jackie Mahedy beat Caroline McCann and Greta Leberfinger, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1; and the team of Kristen Pizzolo and Olivia Hartgers overcame Kelsey Hart and Kendall Contri, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

The girls go on the road for a 4:15 p.m. start today against Paramus Catholic.

  • The girls also posted a 4-1 victory last week over Ridgewood.

At first singles, Muliawan was almost perfect over Hanna Beneson, 6-1, 6-0. It was a clean sweep in singles, as Jouravleva defeated Christina Bicks, 6-3, 6-1, and Nerlino bested Vidushi Sharma, 6-3, 6-2.

The Raiders suffered a defeat in doubles action, as Allison Nolte and Mahedy fell to Ridgewood. However, Garbaccio and Julia Friedberg defeated Rosie Given and Haley Woodenshek, 6-1, 7-5.

Gymnastics

Ramapo didn't fare as well in gymnastics recently, narrowly falling to Pascack Valley High School last week.

The girls dropped to 0-2 on the year after Pascack Valley posted a score of 102.7 to the Raiders 100.35 at a home meet.

The Raiders did well on the vault, with Kristen Giacose taking first with a score of 9.0. Lauren Casey and Emily Hufnagel tied for second with 8.55s, and Claire Scavone took third with a 8.35.

Casey also placed third on the bars, with an 8.425, while Scavone took third on the beam, with an 8.6.

All-around, Casey placed first with a total score of 33.325. Scavone was in second at 33.225, and Hufnagel took third with a 32.85.

The girls compete today at 4:30 p.m. at Ridgewood High School.

Football

The freshmen were unable to complete their game last week against West Milford, due to thunderstorms and time constraints.

However, the game ended at the half with the Raiders up 16-7.

Ramapo struck first, with Pat Laducer taking the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. Kenny Clarke would score on a 30-yard rush, and the Raider defense's three forced turnovers helped set up a safety for the special teams. West Milford got its lone score on a kickoff back to the three-yard line, needing four more plays to get in the end zone.

  • The varsity squad beat West Milford Friday, 27-7, to extend its record to 2-0.
