Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:

  1. NYC DOT announced that cycling traffic over the Brooklyn Bridge is up nearly 90 percent from October 2020, thanks to the newly introduced bike lane. The bike lane features a high barrier to separate bikers from car traffic, making it a far safer transportation route for cyclists. The bike lane is part of a larger initiative on the city's part to make alternative transportation safer and more widespread. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
  2. A report released on Monday, Nov. 8, by the group Advocates for Children, showed that more than 100,000 NYC students were homeless at some point between 2020 and 2021. During a year when students across the world were forced to learn from home, approximately 28,000 students lived in homeless shelters, nearly 65,000 were living "doubled-up" with friends or family, and an additional 3,860 were living in cars, parks, or abandoned buildings. This data represents a 42 percent increase in child homelessness from 2010. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
  3. Trader Joe's will soon be opening in Williamsburg, at 200 Kent Ave. While opening date rumors have been running rampant, Trader Joe's has yet to make any official statement as to when the new location will become operational. Based on this report, opening within the next three weeks seems possible. (Brooklyn Paper)
