Man, 70, Killed By Smart Car While Crossing Brooklyn Street: NYPD

BROOKLYN, NY — A man behind the wheel of a smart car slammed into a pedestrian as he was walking across a Brooklyn street Monday night, police said.

The driver, a 74-year-old man, was behind the wheel of a 2016 Smart Car at about 9:30 p.m. driving on Avenue I, police said.

When the driver reached the intersection of East 5th Street, he struck Dov Broyde, a 70-year-old man who was attempting to cross the street, police said.

Broyde was rushed to Maimonides Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said. According to an NYPD spokesperson, he had been just one block from his home when he was struck.

The driver remained at the scene and was uninjured. No criminal charges were immediately filed.

As of Wednesday, no arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
