Grab a Free Bike Helmet in Boerum Hill on Oct. 15 at Thomas Greene Playground

The bike helmet giveaway is open to all ages, and will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

BOERUM HILL, BROOKLYN — As part of New York's Vision Zero pedestrian and bike safety initiative, the Department of Transportation will be giving out free bike helmets on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Thomas Greene Playground in Boerum Hill.

The giveaway will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thomas Greene Playground is located at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Douglass Street.

The helmets are available for children and adults, but anybody receiving one must be present at the event for fitting and so they can learn how to wear the helmet properly.

Also, a parent or guardian must be on hand to sign a waiver for any child receiving a helmet, and adults have to sign waivers for the helmets they receive themselves.

A total of 17 cyclists were killed on New York's streets, including nine in Brooklyn, through Aug. 31, according to the Vision Zero database. Another 2,980 were injured.
