Crews Battle Transformer Fire at Walt Whitman Mall

The fire broke out in Huntington Station Monday afternoon, and several stores were evacuated, officials said.

A transformer fire broke out Monday afternoon in Walt Whitman Mall behind the Cheesecake Factory in Huntington Station, authorities said.

Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to the incident at 3:52 p.m., according to officials.

Firefighters ventilated smoke and carbon monoxide from the Cheesecake Factory, Panera Bread and Bloomingdale’s stores, which were evacuated, authorities said.

Under the command of Chief Frank McQuade with the support of Second Assistant Jon Hoffmann, about 50 firefighters were on the scene with four engines, two heavy rescue trucks, a ladder truck and Fire Police, according to officials.

The Melville Fire Department assisted at the scene with a Rapid Intervention Team while the Huntington Fire Department provided a standby engine, officials said. Huntington Community First Aid Squad ambulance crews were dispatched to the scene.

In February 2014, a restaurant manager died and more than two dozen others were hospitalized following a carbon monoxide poisoning incident at the eatery’s Walt Whitman location. The restaurant permanently closed its Huntington Station operation in December.

On Monday, fire apparatus were on the scene until around 8:30 p.m. No injuries had been confirmed as of Monday night, officials said.
