LONG ISLAND, NY — A fast-moving line of thunderstorms socked Long Island Saturday afternoon, toppling trees, knocking out power and sending people into their basements as tornado warnings blared on their phones.

From about 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., there was a tornado warning in effect on some part of the island as the storm moved east. All tornado and thunderstorms warnings have now expired, but the damage done on some parts of the island is extensive.

As of 5:45 p.m., PSEG Long Island says 12,187 of its customers are without power. More than 10,000 of those outages are in Suffolk County. See the power outage map.

"Today’s fast moving storm, including possible tornados, has caused scattered outages across the island," PSEG said in a statement. "All available personnel are working to assess storm damage and restore power safely and as quickly as possible."

There's been no confirmation that a tornado touched down yet, but the photos and videos below suggest a confirmed tornado wouldn't come as a surprise.
