Alleged Cop Shooter in Huntington Station Has Criminal History

The man suspected of shooting a Suffolk County police officer Wednesday night in Huntington Station had a criminal past and had himself been shot.

Sheldon Leftenant, of 7 Tippin Drive in Huntington Station, had been shot in August 2014, while standing in front of his home with others when at 9:35 p.m. two cars drove by and someone fired a gun at the group, Suffolk Police said at the time. The bullet struck Leftenant in the groin, and he ultimately underwent surgery at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.

Leftenant was also charged in 2011 with armed robbery. The disposition of that case could not be immediately learned.

Late Wednesday night, Leftenant allegedly shot Suffolk County Police Officer Mark Collins twice, seriously injuring him. The officer is expected to recover.

Leftenant was arrested early Thursday after a massive police search.
