Man Arrested After Fleeing Melville Car Meet-Up: Police

Police say a West Babylon man fled at high speeds before being stopped and arrested.

MELVILLE, NY — A West Babylon man was arrested after he reportedly fled from police during a car meet in Melville Thursday night, police said.

According to Suffolk County police, an officer was on patrol around 9:30 p.m. when he observed a car meet taking place in a parking lot at 68 South Service Road.

Police say that when an officer entered the lot to investigate, the driver of a gray Honda Civic attempted to leave. When the officer tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver turned off his lights and sped away, police said.

The officer stopped the car and arrested the driver, Michael Walter, 23, of West Babylon, police said. Walter was charged with fleeing a police officer and reckless driving; he was also issued eight traffic tickets and his car was seized, police said.

A vehicle search uncovered a device designed to block and unblock the rear license plate, police said.

Walter is scheduled to appear in First District Court in Central Islip on Nov. 5.
