Gaughran Elected To 5th Senate District

Residents headed to the polls on Tuesday.

Voters elected James Gaughran in the New York State fifth senate district election on Tuesday.

James Gaughran, a Democrat, defeated incumbent Carl Marcellino, a Republican, in the state senate election, according to unofficial results.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Gaughran had 62,933 votes compared to 52,883 votes for Marcellino.

Gaughran, a public official and attorney, ran against Marcellino and lost in the previous District 5 election. He previously served on the Huntington Town Board, legislator in the state's 17th district and water authority chairman.

District 5 includes the northern portions of the Towns of Huntington and Oyster Bay and the City of Glen Cove. Check out the district map here.
