SCPD Car Seriously Injures Bicyclist In Huntington Station

The police vehicle was responding to a call with emergency lights on when it struck the bicyclist on Tuesday evening, police say.

A bicyclist suffered serious injuries after being struck by a Suffolk County Police vehicle that was responding to a call on Tuesday evening, police say.

According to authorities, a marked police unit, occupied by two officers, was traveling northbound on New York Avenue, north of May Street, with its emergency lights on when it struck a man riding a bicycle crossing the road at 5:10 p.m.

The bicyclist, identified as 64-year-old Huntington Station resident Miguel Angel Gaitan, airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries, police say.

The two officers were taken to Huntington Hospital for evaluation and released.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check.
