Event: March Movie Matinees: A Celebration of Women Directors

Description: "The Hurt Locker" (R 131 mins • 2008)
During the Iraq War, a Sergeant recently assigned to an army bomb squad is put at odds with his squad mates due to his maverick way of handling his work. Directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Description: Women have always been a force in filmmaking, but often their talents are lost in a male dominated industry. Until the rise of feminism in the late 1960s, female filmmakers’ visions were suppressed until such directors as Penny Marshall, Kathryn Bigelow, Sofia Coppola, and Jane Campion began to push through into the mainstream. Lecturer Greg Blank will examine the dynamics of sexism in the film industry, the challenges women have met and often overcome, and the artistic achievements of female directors over the years. Join us as a quartet of actors share an intriguing murder mystery written by Ann Cleeves. Be an amateur sleuth as you listen to the story, read the forensic report, and solve this whodunit mystery. The perfect Irish Tea Mystery! We will be sharing some treats to eat and a prize will go to the "master sleuth team" who figures out the riddle of who killed Minnie. His predecessor in this occupation, Ethan Brand, has been away for 20 years in search of what Hawthorne calls the “Unpardonable Sin.” Brand’s return to the solitary mountainside and nearby town becomes a vehicle for Hawthorne’s reflections on the religious views of his New England forebears.
