SMITHTOWN, NY — Commack Middle School Girl Scouts created a sensory garden in the Smithtown American Legion's wooded area for their Silver Award, connecting with veterans along the way.

Shayna Simson, Brynn Lennon, Shea Paese, and Giana Borzumato volunteered more than 50 hours to enhance the legion's wooded area, creating a sensory garden filled with various plants, flowers, and items that engage all five senses. The garden was unveiled June 1.

"Throughout the project, the Girl Scouts built meaningful connections with the veterans at the American Legion and were deeply inspired to give back to them in a meaningful way," said Wendy Perisa, Shayna's mother. "The sensory garden is a testament to their hard work and commitment to community service."
