Here are the top five stories in Smithtown today:

  1. The General Election Day is scheduled for Nov. 8. Registered voters can go to various locations in Nassau and Suffolk County to vote early. For those wondering where and what time to go, access the location guide here. If you want to register or access the New York State Board of Elections, visit: https://www.elections.ny.gov/. (NY Gov.)
  2. The town of Smithtown Water District will be flushing fire hydrants Monday through Friday nights until Oct. 7. The initiative aims to remove excess iron and rust build up from the mains. It will be performed throughout the community from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. (Town of Smithtown)
  3. The Smithtown Shredding Day held at the Municipal Services Facility in Kings Park this month helped the community to get rid of 7.76 tons of paper. The event is hosted twice a year and offers the service free of charge. According to the Town's records, 256 cars participated in the disposal of documents. (Town of Smithtown)
  4. Looking for a family outing this weekend? The Hoyt Farm will host Commack Day on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Expect outdoor fun for all ages, food vendors and more! This community event will donate all profits to the Eric Spinato Foundation. (Patch)
  5. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and according to the data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of suicides is increasing among school children. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention aims to create a mental health program for Long Island Schools. The suicide prevention hotline is available 24 hours at 988 or 988lifeline.org.
