Here are the top stories today in Smithtown:

1. The mask-or-proof-of-vaccination mandate for businesses is now extended temporarily until Feb. 10. Governor Kathy Hochul said the situation would be evaluated every two weeks. She added that the school masking policy remains in effect, " despite the fact that there was a little blip, but we are back on track legally."(Patch)
2. Gregory Aponte, 56, a Holbrook man was charged with five counts of third-degree burglary in Brookhaven and Smithtown, Suffolk police say. Whether Aponte is responsible for a recent spate of break-ins in the greater Holbrook area is under investigation, a police spokeswoman said. Aponte has not yet posted a $15,000 bond or $7,500 cash bail, and is due back in court on Tuesday, according to online court records. (Patch)
3. Suffolk County Police Third Precinct officers, Saturday, responded to a Hyman Avenue residence after a 911 caller reported a neighbor had collapsed while using a snow blower at 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, officers observed a 71-year-old man in cardiac distress and without a pulse. Officers began CPR and utilized an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) on the man twice to regain a pulse. The man was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip where he is in critical but stable condition. (smithtownmatters.com)
