Here are the top stories today in Smithtown:
- The board of fire commissioners of the Smithtown Fire District heard about the mission to help the Kentucky Fire Departments, after devastating tornados ravished Mayfield, Kentucky, and numerous other towns and communities. Smithtown decided to donate their surplus fire equipment to the Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, which will go to Kentucky Fire Departments. The donation included over 10 sets of bunker gear worn by fire fighters as well as numerous sets of lighting equipment, gloves, nozzles, fans and even a Hurst "Jaws of Life" extrication cutting tool. (Press Release Desk)
- A 45-year-old Deer Park man was seriously injured when he lost control of his vehicle at Moriches Road, in Lake Grove at 12:29 a.m. on Monday. The Honda struck a utility pole, and the man was ejected from the vehicle, police said. The man was brought to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. The Honda was impounded for a safety check. Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call Fourth Squad detectives at 631-854-8452. (Smithtown Patch)
- Kenny Thompson, a Smithtown West High School graduate who lives in Queens, is honored to continue his great grandfather’s cheesy legacy. "His stepmother, Veronica McReynolds, opened the new dine-in and take-out spot at 339 New York Ave. in Huntington last month. He said he and his dad, Kenneth Thompson, both have prior restaurant experience, and are helping run day-to-day operations at the restaurant," according to reporting in Greater Long Island. Both spent a lot of time in Philadelphia, learning — on both sides of the counter — what it takes to make an authentic Philly cheesesteak. So, “Yeah… lemmegetta cheesesteak with…” (Greater Long Island)
