Smithtown Police Blotter: Man Stole Cash From Lost Wallet
ALSO: Scammers tricked victims into sending money through gift cards over the course of years, police say.
SMITHTOWN, NY — Curious about what's going on in your neighborhood? These are recent incidents reported in the Smithtown area from May 5 through May 11.
The Suffolk County Police Department posted the following information. All charges are accusations and do not signify guilt.

- May 10: Jayme Cruz, 29, of Copiague, found someone's wallet on Oser Avenue in Hauppauge on March 28, police said. Cruz took the cash from the wallet and kept it, police said. He was arrested and charged with third-degree grand larceny: value exceeds $3,000, police said.
Incidents
- May 8: Grand larceny (second-degree) was reported on Drew Lane in Saint James at 5:57 p.m. Victims were contacted over the phone and were told they would receive money as a giveaway prize, but that they had to pay a "small amount of taxes" to receive the prize money, police said. The victims gave the scammers money through gift cards over the past several years, police said.
- May 8: Grand larceny (third-degree) was reported on Middle Country Road in Nesconset at 8:17 a.m. A person cut the gate of Smithtown Acura, police said. The person then stole parts off of two vehicles inside the lot, police said.
